Fuel Cell Buses Coming to Hawaii Volcanoes

04 JAN 2013

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is to begin using two hybrid battery–fuel cell visitor shuttle buses early this year, reports the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
The shuttles were shipped from Kansas to Honolulu last year and are currently undergoing a conversion process at the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies, including fitting of the electric motors and fuel cells.
The buses will operate in a two-year trial, running every 20 minutes between 9 am and 3 pm every day, and will be free for Park visitors.
They will be refuelled at a hydrogen station at Kilauea Military Camp within the Park. The hydrogen will be generated renewably, by electrolysis driven by geothermal electricity.
The project, which began in 2009, is part-funded by the National Park Service in collaboration with several partners, including the State of Hawaii, Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, Hawaii Center for Advancement of Transportation Technologies, Department of Defense, Kilauea Military Camp, Hawaiian Electric Company, Department of Energy, and the Federal Transit Authority.
